Muang thong thani: The National Science Museum Organization's (NSM) board chairman has announced a visionary transformation of science museums into "lifelong learning platforms" at the global "ASPAC 2026" event. This initiative aims to enhance human capital in an increasingly uncertain world. The chairman also outlined five key missions for the future role of science museums.
According to Thai News Agency, Professor Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) and Chairman of NSM, delivered a significant keynote address at the Asia Pacific Network of Science and Technology Centres Conference (ASPAC Conference 2026). The conference, themed 'Museums: Empowering Future Science Engagement in the Age of Uncertainty,' was organized by NSM as part of the National Science and Technology Fair 2026, held at Amber 2-3, IMPACT Exhibition Center, Muang Thong Thani.
Professor Dr. Supachai emphasized the need for science museums to evolve in response to modern world challenges, including climate change, shifting population structures, geopolitical tensions, and rapid technological advancements. He highlighted that learning must extend beyond formal education, establishing "lifelong learning" as a crucial national infrastructure. The Thai government's 14th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2028-2032) prioritizes human capital enhancement, asserting that technology cannot be sustainable without knowledge, skills, and adaptability.
"We must transition from viewing science museums as mere 'exhibition venues' to 'platforms for lifelong science learning' within a comprehensive ecosystem of science, technology, and innovation. This transformation will help the public perceive science as accessible to everyone, encouraging interaction, inquiry, and daily application," stated Professor Dr. Supachai.
He further proposed five pivotal roles for future science museums:
1. Establish a foundation for scientific literacy, offering children and youth direct experiences beyond the classroom.
2. Serve as a lifelong learning platform for all ages, facilitating upskilling and reskilling to keep pace with global developments.
3. Enhance future literacy and skills through inspiring spaces like the Futurium building at the National Science Museum, which offers insights into future careers.
4. Develop innovative tools to boost participation using emerging technologies like AR and VR for more accessible learning experiences.
5. Create a self-directed learning ecosystem, distributing access to science through media, learning kits, and digital channels to reduce inequality and reach remote communities.
Furthermore, Professor Dr. Supachai highlighted the essential role of science museums in bridging the gap between the public and the scientific community, fostering trust and a deeply rooted "science culture" in society, ultimately boosting national competitiveness. "We envision a future where visitors leave the museum empowered to contribute to their own and their country's future. Science museums will be pivotal in shaping the future we aspire to create," he concluded.
