PEA launches Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on Koh Samui

PEA launched the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on Koh Samui, Surat Thani Province. On August 15, 2024, Mr. Supachai Ek-un, Governor of the Provincial Electricity Authority, presided over the opening ceremony of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on Koh Samui, with the Provincial Electricity Authority board, executives, and government officials attending the ceremony in Koh Samui District, Surat Thani Province. The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), under the Ministry of Interior, has procured 2 sets of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 12.5 megawatts (MW) / 25 megawatt-hours (MWh) on Koh Samui, Surat Thani Province, using a rental service model. The installation and rental services are provided along with maintenance by PEA ENCOM International Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of PEA, to solve the problem of electricity shortages and increase the efficiency of the existing underwater cable to accommodate the increasing number of foreign tourists traveling to Koh Samui, Koh Pha ngan, and Koh Tao in Surat Thani Province each year. PEA has set a goal for energy management to enable BESS to supply electricity to the PEA system at least 50,000 units per day for a period of 120 months in order to supply electricity during peak demand, increase the stability of the electrical system, and solve the electricity shortage problem on Koh Samui. Currently, PEA has 4 underwater cables supplying electricity to Koh Samui, but there is 1 underwater cable supplying electricity to Koh Samui 2 power station, which reduces the burden and risk of using underwater cables and is a guideline for developing a model for solving electrical system problems for other remote areas, promoting tourism and community economy, as well as increasing the stability of the electrical system in remote areas to have sufficient energy, leading to learning, developing and expanding the use of Energy Storage technology with Renewable Energy, including solving electrical system problems in the future and being able to be used commercially on a wide scale.
