Prime Minister Calls for Immediate Action as Sadao Floodwaters Threaten Hat Yai

Hat yai: The Prime Minister expressed concern over the increasing floodwaters from Sadao converging on Hat Yai, urging the governors of the three southern border provinces to prepare for the situation. He emphasized the need for swift action and directed the expedited approval of the relief budget framework to the Cabinet, with expectations of an improved situation within the week.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the flooding crisis in Songkhla Province, noting the continuous influx of water from Sadao District. He highlighted that all relevant agencies are actively mobilizing necessary resources, including tools, machinery, water pumps, and generators. The Provincial Electricity Authority has already deployed generators across five established evacuation centers. The Prime Minister anticipates the situation to stabilize and return to normalcy shortly.

The Prime Minister noted that ongoing drainage efforts are crucial due to the heavy rainfalls that have led to significant flooding in the region. In Hat Yai District, the R.1 Canal is operating at its maximum capacity to cope with the water influx. He further explained that the rainfall and subsequent flooding are likely to affect the three southern border provinces, prompting the governors to activate contingency plans. The government is working to ensure that food, evacuation centers, and essential supplies are readily available. Additionally, the government is fast-tracking the approval of relief funds for affected households, with a Cabinet meeting set to finalize this tomorrow.

Addressing the plight of those stranded in various areas, the Prime Minister acknowledged initial challenges but assured that measures are being implemented to boost confidence. He stressed that while the warning systems are operational, the magnitude of the crisis requires extensive mobilization beyond provincial resources. In heavily affected areas like Hat Yai District, where power outages have hindered cooking, there is an urgent need to improve food distribution systems. The Prime Minister confirmed that from today onwards, provincial authorities have intensified their efforts to ensure food and assistance reach those in need.
