Bangkok: The Prime Minister has reiterated that the proposed land bridge project connecting Chumphon and Ranong should not proceed at this time, citing concerns about its cost-effectiveness and potential benefits. He emphasized the ongoing focus on the "Missing Link" project, which aims to connect the Gulf of Thailand with the Andaman Sea and expand the capacity of Ranong port to handle more cargo.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the review and potential adjustments to the 1 trillion baht land bridge project, stating that its construction is not yet justified by current cargo volumes. Anutin highlighted the strategic importance of creating a transportation link that fills the "missing link" between existing infrastructures. While the project is not immediately viable, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that future opportunities will not be overlooked by the residents of Ranong and Chumphon.
The Prime Minister further elaborated on the necessity of building foundational infrastructure, comparing it to gradually expanding a new business. He assured that the framework for the project is in place, and expansion will be pursued when deemed necessary. Anutin acknowledged varying opinions on the land bridge, emphasizing that the decision will ultimately reflect the will of the local communities and their assessment of potential regional benefits.
In his remarks, the Prime Minister noted that Ranong currently stands to benefit from an integrated transportation network, with future expansions to be considered as the need arises.
