Bangkok:The Prime Minister has launched the "Solar Power for the People" project, targeting 1 million households to reduce electricity costs and generate income through selling surplus electricity.
According to Thai News Agency, the initiative was officially launched by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul at a ceremony today. The project, known as the 'People's Solar Project,' is designed to turn rooftops into energy sources, thereby transforming electricity bills into savings for families and involving citizens in energy production.
The project includes a subsidy of 50,000 baht per household to support 1 million households in generating their own solar energy. This move aims not only to cut energy costs but also to allow households to sell excess electricity back to the national grid, thus generating additional income. It is expected to reduce public electricity costs by over 24.5 billion baht annually, which will boost the grassroots economy through increased employment and economic opportunities.
The Prime Minister highlighted the project's potential to enhance Thailand's trade opportunities by aligning with global demands for environmentally friendly energy sources. Additionally, the project is part of Thailand's efforts to prepare for membership in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which could unlock new economic, trade, and investment opportunities.
In conclusion, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to all sectors for their role in advancing the project, emphasizing the need for collaboration to ensure access to clean energy at fair prices and achieve long-term energy security.
