Bangkok: The Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, is set to embark on an official visit to Australia and New Zealand from August 17-22, in a bid to open markets, attract investment, and elevate strategic partnerships for Thailand.
According to Thai News Agency, this visit marks the first official trip by a Thai Prime Minister to Australia in 14 years, coming ahead of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations in 2027. During the visit to Australia, the Prime Minister will engage in discussions with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to advance the strategic partnership, focusing on trade, investment, security, clean energy, science, technology, and innovation. A key element of these discussions will involve progressing the Joint Action Plan on the Thailand-Australia Strategic Partnership 2026-2029.
The Prime Minister's delegation will include representatives from the Thai private sector, who will participate in a Business Networking event organized by the Board of Investment in collaboration with Austrade. This event aims to facilitate networking and partnerships between Thai and Australian businesses, with a focus on expanding investments, particularly in future industries and clean energy.
The visit to New Zealand will be the first by a Thai Prime Minister in 13 years, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Discussions with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon are expected to culminate in the signing of a joint declaration, elevating Thai-New Zealand relations to a formal strategic partnership. This strategic framework is anticipated to enhance long-term cooperation between the nations.
The visit also aims to promote Thai products in the New Zealand market and attract New Zealand investment into Thailand. Direct discussions are planned with interested companies such as Skyline Enterprises and Fisher and Paykel. Additionally, Thai private sector representatives will engage in business matching with New Zealand entrepreneurs to translate government-level relationships into tangible business opportunities.
In terms of security, Thailand and New Zealand will enhance cooperation in combating transnational crime, addressing issues that directly impact the safety and property of citizens. Additionally, efforts are underway to resume direct flights between Bangkok and Auckland, which would facilitate tourism, education, business, and travel.
Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, emphasized the government's objective for these visits: to expand markets for Thai products, secure new trading partners, attract investment and knowledge, and ensure that the Thai people benefit from economic expansion, increased safety, and improved connectivity. By including the private sector in the delegation, the government aims to translate international relations into real business opportunities and investments, ultimately benefiting Thailand and its citizens.
