Manchester: "ProRef," the professional referees' organization in England, has admitted to a "misjudging error" after its refereeing team controversially awarded Manchester City a winning goal in their 1-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
According to Thai News Agency, the controversial moment occurred in the 60th minute. Josko Guardiol crossed the ball to Erling Haaland, who charged in and scored at the far post. Initially, the assistant referee flagged it as offside, but the VAR team reviewed the play and determined that Haaland was not in an offside position and did not see Enzo Fernandez, who was clearly offside and attempting to head the ball, as being involved in the play.
A statement from "ProRef" admitted just hours after the game that the reversal of the decision and the awarding of the goal to Manchester City was a "mistake" and that they had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge that, ideally, the VAR room should have advised the on-field referee, Michael Oliver, to review the replay on the monitor to determine whether the goal should have been given to Manchester City.
