Road toll hits 34 on Day 6 of break

Thirty-four people died and 274 others were injured in 264 road accidents on Monday, the sixth of the “seven dangerous days” around the New Year period, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported. According to official data, speeding was the most common cause of the accidents on Monday — 35% — followed by drink-driving at 18%. Some 83% involved motorcycles and 6% pickups, the next highest group. Almost 80% of the accidents took place on straight roads, and 9% of them happened between 4pm and 5pm.
