Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has announced a significant influx of applications for volunteer soldiers, with 4,180 individuals applying within the first five days of recruitment. Special Forces units have emerged as the most popular choice among applicants, with several units already fulfilling their recruitment quotas.
According to Thai News Agency, the Army's recruitment drive for the year 2027 is part of a new initiative under the Ministry of Defence's policy, which commenced on September 10, 2026. The Royal Thai Army aims to recruit a total of 18,784 personnel across 221 military units nationwide. As of the fifth day of this recruitment effort, the Army has received 4,180 applications, accounting for 22.25% of available positions.
Currently, seven army units have reached their full recruitment quota. These include the 1st Special Forces Battalion of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th Special Forces Regiments, the 2nd Special Forces Battalion of the 2nd and 5th Special Forces Regiments, and the 22nd Signal Battalion in the 2nd Army Area. These developments indicate a growing interest among Thai men in serving in specialized military roles.
The "Volunteer Soldier" program, part of the Ministry of Defense's policy, aims to reform the compulsory military service system by offering a four-year contract format. This initiative includes a starting monthly salary of 12,090 baht, a monthly allowance of 2,880 baht for living expenses, educational enhancement opportunities, vocational skill development, quotas for entry into the Army Non-Commissioned Officer School, and bonus points for Army job applications.
The recruitment period for the volunteer soldier program remains open until January 24, 2027, offering interested individuals ample time to apply and join the ranks of the Royal Thai Army.
