Royal Thai Navy Clarifies Stance on Gulf of Thailand Blockade Proposal

Bangkok: The Royal Thai Navy has confirmed that there are no plans to close the Gulf of Thailand. Instead, they propose blocking the shipment of strategic supplies to ensure national security.

According to Thai News Agency, the Royal Thai Navy emphasized that the proposal is aimed solely at obstructing the transport of military supplies to safeguard public safety. They reiterated their commitment to international law, assuring that freedom of navigation will remain unaffected and that countries not involved in the situation will not face any restrictions.

Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiyapan, a spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy, highlighted that the strategy aligns with international law and does not restrict navigation rights. He assured that any actions taken would be considerate of international legal frameworks and obligations.

Thailand continues to uphold the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The Royal Thai Navy is dedicated to conducting operations carefully and responsibly, ensuring adherence to international standards.

Captain Nara Khunthodhom, Assistant Spokesperson of the Royal Thai Navy, explained that the proposal is for the National Security Council (NSC) to evaluate certain high-risk sea areas. This initiative aims to limit access for Thai-flagged vessels in these zones to protect public safety and maritime workers. It is not intended as a closure of the bay and will not impact foreign vessels or those from third countries.
