Havana: Russia and China have declared their strong support for Cuba, condemning the United States for escalating sanctions and using the judicial process for political purposes after the US government announced it would indict former Cuban President Raºl Castro on murder charges. This is the highest possible measure taken by President Donald Trump in an attempt to transition the Cuban regime that has been in power since the 1959 revolution.
According to Thai News Agency, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Russia will continue to provide full assistance to Cuba during this difficult time. Similarly, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed strong opposition to the United States' use of repressive laws against other countries and called for an end to military intimidation.
While U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that the chances of a peace negotiation with Cuba are slim at this time, the U.S. remains open to diplomacy, stating that all actions are directly related to U.S. national security. Furthermore, the U.S. has arrested Addis Lastress Moreira, the sister of the CEO of a Cuban military-backed business network, who entered the U.S. as a legal permanent resident in 2023, in preparation for deportation. However, amidst this tension, the U.S. Secretary of State stated that Cuba has accepted $100 million in humanitarian aid from the United States.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez responded by saying the US Secretary of State fabricated lies to provoke a military confrontation that would lead to bloodshed on both sides. He affirmed that Cuba does not pose a security threat to the US, but rather the US is deliberately trying to cripple Cuba's economy. Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Daz-Canel posted on social media X, reiterating his complete rejection of the charges against his former leader. The Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister stated that the US actions were a political game and lacked legitimacy, warning that if the US launched a military offensive against Cuban officials, it would face strong opposition from the Cuban people.
