S. Korea, U.S. standard agencies discuss ties in emerging industries

SEOUL: South Korea's standards agency said Friday it has discussed ways to expand ties with U.S. counterparts in addressing standards-related issues in emerging technologies. The meeting among the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), the American National Standards Institute and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) included discussions on a new standards project in areas, such as bio-semiconductors. During the event, around 70 government officials and business experts, including those from Intel Corp. and IBM Corp., exchanged their strategies for standards in cutting-edge industries, the agency added. KATS and NIST also signed a memorandum of understanding to promote bilateral cooperation on international and regional platforms. "The MOU will pave the way for the government and private sector to establish a channel of cooperation for standards with the U.S., a leader in this field," KATS Administrator Chin Chong-wook said.
