Bangkok: Continuing the legacy of Thai classical dance and drama, the Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre recently celebrated its 93rd anniversary by hosting the annual Wai Kru and Khrob Kru ceremony for Khon and Lakhon, Thai traditional masked dance-drama. Air Vice Marshal Supichai Sunthornburana, Deputy Secretary-General of the Royal Household, presided over the ceremony, which took place at the Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre.
According to Thai News Agency, the event commenced at 8:00 AM with a merit-making ceremony dedicated to King Prajadhipok and Queen Rambhai Barni, followed by the Wai Kru and Khrob Kru ceremony at 9:09 AM. Associate Professor Dr. Supachai Chansuwann, a National Artist, served as the presiding teacher for the ceremony. Narumon Lomthong, Managing Director of Sahasinima Co., Ltd., organized the event, which was attended by sponsors, distinguished guests, and many National Artists.
The ceremony welcomed a diverse group of participants, including teachers specializing in dance and music, singers, actors, and performers from the Thai entertainment and performing arts industries, as well as students. Among the notable attendees were National Artists Wirat Yuthathavorn, Winai Panthurak, and Ratchana Puangprayong. Additionally, artists from the entertainment industry, such as Pongpat Wachirabanjongmatra and Thanya Wachirabanjongmatra, along with students from various educational institutions, participated in the sacred rituals.
The Wai Kru and Khrob Kru ceremonies are held annually and allow disciples to pay respect to sacred entities and revered teachers. This event demonstrates gratitude and respect toward teachers who imparted knowledge and blessings upon their disciples. Currently, the Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre presents the Khon performance 'Hanuman,' offering an opportunity for both Thai and foreign tourists to experience this exquisite art form. The performances, directed by Associate Professor Dr. Supachai Chansuwann, are held from Monday to Friday, with three shows daily. Tickets are available at different prices for Thai citizens and foreign tourists.
