Bangkok:The old Samyan alleyway, once overlooked by passersby, is undergoing a transformation into a vibrant art space for cat lovers, thanks to the 'Samyan Soi Maew Powered by HYPE DISTRICT' project. This initiative, led by the Property Management Office of Chulalongkorn University (PMCU), brings together 16 street artists to revitalize the area, turning vacant shophouses and old walls into creative spaces.
According to Thai News Agency, the project not only aims to infuse new life into the neighborhood but also to contribute to the upcoming Samyan Art Week. It focuses on developing a model for caring for stray cats in the community, with art installations depicting the stories of these cats and community life.
The transformation involves PMCU partnering with HYPE SPRAY and various artists to create murals on 16 old building walls. This effort turns the alley into a lively space where art lovers can explore Samyan from a fresh perspective. The initiative also connects artists, galleries, and entrepreneurs to create a vibrant neighborhood, fostering collaboration among diverse talents.
Significant changes include the conversion of shophouses into galleries and cafes, with old restaurants remaining a staple of the community. The area, known for its longstanding eateries like Je Yu's Pork Blood Soup shop and Je Tim's Crispy Pork Rice, is now also home to new businesses like POC Cafe and Chicken Roast, blending traditional and contemporary elements.
The project further plans to address the issue of stray cats by collaborating with JohnJud (Stray), a Chulalongkorn University Veterinary Student Club, to manage the stray cat population through health care and sterilization initiatives. This reflects PMCU's commitment to integrating community welfare with neighborhood development.
Looking forward, PMCU aims to expand its collaborations to organize Samyan Art Week in November 2026, featuring activities like a Gallery Walk, Art Market, and Movie Night. The area in front of the Phra Phuttha Yodfa Shrine will host these events, providing opportunities for local businesses to thrive alongside cultural activities.
'Samyan Soi Maew Powered by HYPE District' exemplifies how collaborative efforts by PMCU, artists, entrepreneurs, and the community can lead to positive change, preserving the original charm of Samyan while creating new opportunities.
