Bangkok: Senator Dr. Premsak Pirayura has raised concerns about the Senate Casino Committee, highlighting potential issues of budget waste and political maneuvering.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Premsak expressed skepticism over the committee’s purpose and the lengthy six-month consideration period. He suggested that the committee might be more focused on political negotiations rather than effective legislation. Dr. Premsak voiced his belief that the committee’s establishment is unnecessary, especially following the government’s withdrawal of the Entertainment Complex Bill.
Dr. Premsak questioned the absence of qualified experts, such as Mr. Sangsit Piriyarangsan, in the committee. Despite Mr. Sangsit’s expertise in the informal economy and gambling, his exclusion from the committee raises questions about the committee’s composition and intentions. Dr. Premsak argued that existing studies and research should be utilized to avoid unnecessary expenditure and time.
In addition to the entertainment complex issue, Dr. Premsak expressed concern over the pending Online Gambling Act. He warned that the push for online gambling could lead to widespread harm, as gambling could be accessed from anywhere. Dr. Premsak stated his commitment to opposing both the casino and online gambling initiatives, fearing the potential negative impacts.
Dr. Premsak further elaborated that the integrated entertainment venue law has been withdrawn from the parliament’s agenda, and he believes that the Pheu Thai Party will not reintroduce it due to widespread opposition. He emphasized the need for vigilance regarding the online gambling issue, noting its origins in the Ministry of Interior.
When questioned about the government’s policy on integrated entertainment venues, Dr. Premsak clarified that it was not part of the Pheu Thai Party’s initial campaign. He suggested that any policy should be introduced at the beginning of a campaign to ensure public support, reflecting on the importance of aligning policy implementation with initial campaign promises.
