Samut Songkhram:The Senator from Samut Songkhram has called on the government to urgently address flooding caused by overflowing dam waters in the region. He has requested the deployment of water-pushing boats and emphasized the need for emergency funds, urging that Samut Songkhram be included in the government's app for registration to receive compensation.
According to Thai News Agency, the flooding in Samut Songkhram province is attributed to heavy rainfall in Kanchanaburi, which led to the Vajiralongkorn Dam and the Srinakarin Dam reaching capacity. Excess rainwater flowed into the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai rivers, eventually entering the city via the Mae Klong Dam, resulting in water volumes exceeding the dam’s discharge capacity.
The high water volume has significantly impacted areas upstream of the Mae Klong Dam, damaging fish farms and floating structures, and inundating agricultural lands and homes in Bang Khon Thi and Amphawa districts. While the Mueang district experienced less flooding due to lower tide levels, there is a critical shortage of water-pushing boats needed to assist affected areas. Budget allocation and public donations are needed to secure these boats and provide fuel.
Local government administrators have been encouraged to use their authority to remove obstructions to water flow and alleviate drainage issues. Senator Suphachok Salakij urged government agencies to expedite the procurement of essential equipment and called for local organizations to effectively manage disaster relief budgets. He suggested providing microorganisms to treat polluted water caused by prolonged flooding.
Mr. Tewarit Maneechai highlighted the need for Samut Songkhram to be added to the flood relief compensation list, hoping for cabinet approval in the upcoming meeting. Ms. Tuangkhun Songthammawat called for a study of the flooding causes and the creation of a citizen network to aid in water management and problem-solving efforts.
