Bangkok: Prime Minister Srisaket Sihasak participated in the 9th Joint Commission meeting between Thailand and Russia, marking the first such meeting in three years. The focus was on enhancing economic cooperation and identifying new collaborative opportunities. Sihasak reaffirmed Thailand's position on the Russia-Ukraine situation, emphasizing it as the "right position" while prioritizing national interests.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, highlighted the significance of the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation meeting held today. He emphasized that while various topics would be addressed, political progress remains of utmost importance. The meeting, which has not occurred in the last three years, ideally should take place every one or two years to facilitate progress on numerous issues. New areas of cooperation, particularly in cybersecurity, digital technology, and ICT where Russia has expertise, were also explored.
Questions arose regarding Thailand's decision to participate in the meeting amid the ongoing conflict and sanctions involving Russia. Mr. Sihasak explained that despite opposing aggression, the situation is complex, involving geopolitical factors beyond just the invasion of Ukraine. He stressed the importance of considering national interests without undermining the principle of aggression. Countries like Indonesia and Malaysia also recognize the significance of maintaining relations. He assured that Thailand's stance on Ukraine has been correctly understood by Russia, and the relationship between the two nations should continue to progress.
