Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, emphasized the importance of improving the quality of life for citizens as a primary goal in peace talks aimed at reducing violence in southern Thailand. Addressing the concerns surrounding the upcoming Malaysian National Anniversary and potential unrest during a mobile cabinet meeting, Sihasak highlighted the need for robust security measures to ensure safety and build confidence in the region.
According to Thai News Agency, Sihasak, who oversees the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPC) and serves as Vice Chairman of the National Security Council (NSC), is implementing short-term security measures to prevent any recurrence of incidents. Recent discussions with government agencies and the private sector have focused on building confidence through improved intelligence gathering, more accurate information, and timely responses to threats. Sihasak also underscored the importance of community engagement, stressing the need to work closely with the local population to address their concerns.
Sihasak noted that while dialogue is a crucial component of resolving the ongoing issues, it is not a comprehensive solution. The well-being of the people, improving living standards, and creating opportunities, particularly for the youth, are essential objectives that must be addressed alongside efforts to reduce violence. He reiterated that political dialogues should run concurrently with these efforts to ensure a holistic approach to peace and stability in the region.
