Bangkok: Siripong Angkasakulkiat, spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, has confirmed the indefinite suspension of cooperation with Cambodia due to ongoing tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border. This decision follows a National Security Council (NSC) meeting where Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul assigned the Defense and Foreign Ministers to clarify the situation.
According to Thai News Agency, Siripong emphasized that the Prime Minister’s assignment to the ministers was to ensure direct and accurate communication to the public regarding the border situation. He urged media cooperation to guarantee the dissemination of complete and accurate information. The Prime Minister’s orders include preparations for potential scenarios in the seven Thai-Cambodian border provinces, assuring that normal operations continue without causing public panic.
When questioned about the duration of the cooperative suspension, Siripong stated that there is no set timeframe. The Ministry of Defense will evaluate the situation until Cambodian hostility decreases, highlighted by a recent incident where Thai soldiers encountered a landmine allegedly planted by Cambodia. Consequently, meetings of the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) and other cooperative efforts are suspended. Thailand will proceed independently where feasible, avoiding collaboration with Cambodia.
Regarding the potential cancellation of agreements if Cambodia remains unresponsive, Siripong mentioned that the NSC would reassess the situation. He noted that labor agreements, particularly concerning Cambodian workers, have seen symbolic changes. Contracts for Cambodian workers have not been extended, distinguishing Cambodia from Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.
In response to potential injuries to soldiers, Siripong assured that strategic plans are in place, managed by the Defense Ministry. These matters remain confidential, with the security sector handling implementations, and the Prime Minister providing full support.
