Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram announced plans to establish an alcohol control committee, with a focus on fair law enforcement while considering both economic and health aspects. He emphasized the importance of balancing these factors to ensure effective governance.
According to Thai News Agency, Sophon Saram addressed the progress of the selection process for the new Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission. He revealed that a meeting would be convened this week to discuss the new Alcoholic Beverage Control Act and to consider forming a selection committee. Sophon highlighted the need to enforce the law impartially, ensuring it aligns with economic conditions.
Sophon mentioned that the legislation’s enactment, while concerning alcohol, also relates to drug issues. He pointed out the potential for individuals who consume excessive alcohol to develop mental health problems. Consequently, he has tasked the committee responsible for drug issues with drafting comprehensive legislation to address all drug-related matters.
Addressing concerns about the discretion of officers in enforcing the law, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed the importance of considering the economic situation’s interconnectedness with public health. He confirmed his commitment to maintaining fairness and balance in law enforcement, warning that failure to do so could result in legal consequences.
