Yala: Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, Speaker of the National Assembly and Speaker of the House of Representatives, along with Mr. Sukarno Matha, Member of Parliament for the Prachachat Party, Constituency 2, visited Raman District in Yala Province to offer support to flood victims. The team distributed relief supplies to residents of Wang Phaya Subdistrict across seven villages at Ban To Pakae School, reaching a total of 300 people with essential consumer goods.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Charoonsak Mad-teng, Raman District Chief, reported that the flooding was due to continuous rainfall, impacting over 3,000 people in 16 subdistricts and 50 villages. Despite the challenges, the situation is reportedly better than last year, as efficient water drainage has been implemented.
Mr. Sukarno expressed gratitude to the Speaker of the House of Representatives for visiting the area to provide encouragement. He noted that while the water volume in Raman District is higher this year, improved water management under the Yala Model has facilitated rapid drainage into the Sai Buri River and the dredged canals.
The Speaker of the National Assembly acknowledged the delay in reaching the area due to an official visit to the State of Qatar. Upon returning to Thailand, they promptly visited the affected region. They have been closely monitoring the situation with local authorities and have ensured that assistance reached residents stranded in their homes. They also conveyed their condolences to the families of the three individuals who lost their lives due to the flooding.
The Speaker mentioned ongoing efforts to address the flooding issue in Yala Province, with initiatives starting in July. He has convened meetings with government agencies at both the Parliament building and in Yala. While rainfall cannot be controlled, he emphasized that with proper preparation, the damage can be minimized.
The “Yala Model” flood relief project, initiated by the President of the National Assembly, involves collaboration among various government levels and academics. The project, which started in early 2025, focuses on expanding drainage channels, managing shelters, providing additional relief boats, and implementing medical measures to mitigate flooding impacts in Yala Province.
