Colombo: Heavy rains and flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka have killed 123 people and left 130 others missing, Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said on Saturday. The DMC reported that nearly 44,000 people have been displaced and are now residing in state welfare centers after their homes were destroyed by a week of intense rainfall. Many individuals are trapped on rooftops, and air force video footage shows ongoing efforts to airlift people to safety.
According to Thai News Agency, food aid from India arrived early Saturday morning to assist with relief efforts as Tropical Storm Ditwah continued its path across Sri Lanka towards southern India. The flooding, which has significantly impacted large areas across southern and eastern Sri Lanka, including parts of the capital Colombo, is anticipated to spread further, as noted by the Irrigation Department on Friday.
