Bangkok: A devastating accident unfolded at the Asoke-Din Daeng intersection when a State Railway of Thailand (SRT) freight train collided with a Route 206 bus, leading to tragic consequences. The incident involved freight train No. 2126, which was en route from Laem Chabang to Bang Sue Junction. The collision occurred at the Asoke-Phetchaburi intersection, resulting in a severe crash and subsequent fire. Initial reports indicate that eight individuals inside the bus lost their lives, while approximately 25 others sustained injuries. Rescue teams and related agencies are actively providing assistance and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.
According to Thai News Agency, the accident severely impacted the operations at the Airport Rail Link (ARL) Makkasan station, situated above the incident site. Smoke from the fiery collision engulfed the platforms, prompting officials to temporarily close the station for safety reasons. Trains bypassed the station until firefighters managed to control the blaze. Normal services at Makkasan station resumed at 4:35 PM after the situation was deemed safe.
Mr. Pichet Kunathamarak, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport, promptly led a team of officials and experts to the accident scene to investigate and facilitate assistance for those affected. He instructed the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to cooperate fully with police efforts to gather evidence and determine the accident's cause. The Ministry of Transport and the Department of Rail Transport (DRT) have mandated strict action, urging the SRT and DRT to expedite investigations to uncover the root cause of the accident at the level crossing.
