Bangkok: Suksit Srichomkhwan, a spokesman for the Pheu Thai Party, has taken aim at the Prime Minister for his perceived sluggishness on the international stage, particularly concerning Thailand’s diplomatic efforts with the United States, China, and Malaysia. Suksit has voiced concerns over statements made by the Prime Minister that he believes could jeopardize Thailand’s territorial integrity and erode public confidence in the government’s ability to manage the country effectively.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suksit addressed the ongoing border dispute with Cambodia, highlighting it as a reflection of the government’s failure to adequately manage international relations. He emphasized the importance of protecting national sovereignty and responding assertively to any encroachments. Drawing comparisons with previous Pheu Thai administrations, he noted that they had successfully collaborated with security forces and international allies to safeguard sovereignty while balancing economic interests. He dismissed claims of a ceasefire under the previous government, asserting that Pheu Thai had garnered international support to resolve conflicts diplomatically.
Mr. Suksit contrasted this with the current Bhumjaithai Party government’s approach, criticizing the Prime Minister for making statements that could compromise Thailand’s territorial claims and diminish its credibility on the global stage. He urged a proactive diplomatic strategy, suggesting that Thailand should not wait for Cambodia, Malaysia, and the United States to take the lead but instead engage these nations directly to uphold peace agreements and leverage international support against Cambodian actions.
He further expressed concerns about the government’s ineffective management, which he believes has left Thailand vulnerable to pressures from both Cambodia and the United States. This situation, he argued, has significant economic implications, affecting international trade valued at over 3 trillion baht, and impacting tens of millions of citizens. Additionally, he highlighted the government’s ongoing struggle with domestic issues, such as the persistent call center scams that have plagued Thai society.
Mr. Suksit concluded by questioning the public and the opposition on whether the government’s actions, or lack thereof, warrant continued trust in its leadership. He emphasized the need for decisive action to protect national interests and restore confidence in Thailand’s governance on both the domestic and international fronts.
