Supamas Promotes Digital Chess for Thai Youth on International Stage

Bangkok: Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, is taking significant steps to promote "digital chess" as a means to cultivate Thai youth for the global stage. She has instructed the Public Relations Department to actively promote the upcoming ASEAN E-Sports Chess Cup 2026.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Supamas, along with Mr. Pradermchai Boonchuaylue, Ms. Patcharin Samsiripong, and Mr. Chaiwat Boonchawalit, recently met with executives from the International Chess Association of Thailand, led by President Mr. Sahaphol Nakwanich. The discussions focused on promoting both international and digital chess to enhance the potential of Thai youth, aiming to position Thailand as a hub for sports and digital innovation.

The ASEAN E-Sports Chess Cup 2026 is scheduled for June 13, 2026, at the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok. This prestigious tournament will feature top chess players from Europe, the Middle East, and champions from 11 ASEAN countries, including world-renowned players Magnus Carlsen from Norway and Fabiano Caruana from the United States.

Ms. Supamas emphasized the government's commitment to promoting soft power and the digital economy under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's leadership. She highlighted the importance of chess in developing essential skills such as analytical thinking, planning, decision-making, and concentration among young people.

"Digital chess offers Thai youth a platform to compete and learn alongside world-class athletes," Ms. Supamas stated, noting that hosting this competition showcases Thailand's readiness in terms of personnel, technology, and digital infrastructure to become the digital sports hub of ASEAN.

The Public Relations Department has been tasked with publicizing the competition through various channels to boost awareness, encourage youth participation, and project a positive image of Thailand on the international stage. Ms. Supamas urged the public to support Thai athletes by following the competition through the Public Relations Department's channels and the Thailand Chess Federation website.

The opening ceremony of the ASEAN E-Sports Chess Cup 2026 will commence at 9:00 AM, featuring key highlights such as a special interview with Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen and Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana at 4:00 PM, a meet-and-greet with chess fans at 5:00 PM, and the awards ceremony at 6:00 PM.
