Bangkok: The National Blood Centre of the Thai Red Cross Society has called upon Buddhist monks and citizens across Thailand to partake in a significant merit-making activity in honor of His Holiness Somdej Phra Ariyavongsakhatayan, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, as he approaches his 99th birthday on June 26, 2026. The event, titled "Great Compassion and Merit: United Blood Donation in Honor of His Holiness Somdej Phra Ariyavongsakhatayan, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, on the Auspicious Occasion of His 99th Birthday," will occur from June 26-28, 2026. Blood donations can be made at the National Blood Centre, seven fixed blood donation stations, 12 regional blood service centers, and various hospital branches nationwide.
According to Thai News Agency, Associate Professor Dr. Dujchai Chaiwanichsiri, Director of the National Blood Centre, Thai Red Cross Society, emphasized the importance of this event as an opportunity for merit-making, urging monks and Buddhists across the nation to donate blood to help patients in need. The project is not only a tribute to the Supreme Patriarch but also aligns with the wishes of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavadi and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The initiative was organized to maintain a sufficient blood supply in hospitals nationwide during the mourning period, highlighting the spirit of gratitude and selflessness promoted by the Supreme Patriarch.
His Holiness Somdej Phra Ariyavongsakhatayan, born on June 26, 1927, in Ratchaburi Province, was originally named Amporn Prasatthapong. He was bestowed the title of "Somdej Phra Ariyavongsakhatayan, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand" by His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn on February 12, 2017, becoming the 20th Supreme Patriarch of the Rattanakosin era. Known for his honesty, simplicity, and dedication to Buddhist service, he serves as an exemplary figure for all Buddhists.
The blood donation drive offers multiple locations for participation, including seven fixed stations at Red Cross Station 11, Wiset Niyom, Bang Khae, The Mall Lifestyle Stores in Bang Khae, Bang Kapi, Ngam Wong Wan, Tha Phra, Emporium Shopping Center, and Baan Song Thai in Wong Sawang. Additionally, 12 regional centers are situated in Lopburi, Chonburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Sawan, Phitsanulok, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, and Phuket.
