Bangkok: Building on half a century of diplomatic relations, Thailand and China have launched the “Golden Year of Friendship,” aimed at establishing a “Community of Shared Future” through a focus on research and innovation.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Surasak Pancharoenworakul, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, inaugurated the event, emphasizing the pivotal role of cooperation in science, technology, and innovation between the two nations. Over 900 collaborative projects have been undertaken, with more than 700 under the purview of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation. These projects serve as vital connections, facilitating academic advancements and fostering sustainable partnerships between Thailand and China.
The collaboration has expanded to address pressing 21st-century challenges, including artificial intelligence, big data, environmental technology, water resource management, climate change, space technology, and food security. Mr. Surasak expressed confidence in the continued growth of this cooperation, highlighting the deep-rooted friendship between the countries.
Professor Gao Xiang, President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted the significance of this historical milestone in Thailand-China relations. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1975, the countries have evolved into “communities of shared destiny,” growing together in political, economic, and cultural dimensions. Professor Gao proposed enhancing future cooperation by sharing development experiences, strengthening existing strengths, and expanding international collaborations.
Dr. Wiparat Di-ong, Director of the National Research Council of Thailand, underscored the long-standing partnership between NRCT and CASS, which has resulted in the creation of the “CASS-NRCT CCS China Research Center.” This center, inaugurated in May 2024, symbolizes the deepening collaboration in social sciences and humanities.
Following the ceremony, Mr. Surasak and Prof. Gao toured a book exhibition featuring works on Chinese politics and diplomacy, including “Xi Jinping: Governing China.” These resources were donated to various institutions, further supporting knowledge sharing on China studies.
The “Golden Year of Thai-Chinese Friendship” event, organized by NRCT and CASS, aims to drive tangible results in academic cooperation, enhance understanding between the countries, and chart the future direction of their friendship, with a shared vision for stable and sustainable development driven by science and innovation.
