Ayutthaya: A 70-year-old man, Laiad, has been living, eating, and sleeping on the roof of his house in Sena, Ayutthaya, for up to three weeks as the province's flooding crisis enters its fourth month. The overflow from the Noi River continues to submerge over 1,000 homes in the district, with water levels still rising following recent heavy rain.
According to Thai News Agency, Laiad's riverside home was among the first flooded, yet he refuses to evacuate. He cites fears for his belongings and a lack of alternative shelter as reasons for his decision to stay. Laiad has adapted to his rooftop lifestyle by using a makeshift awning for sun protection and cooking on a small gas stove. He sustains himself with vegetables grown in foam boxes that float in the water surrounding his home.
With the electricity cut, Laiad relies on a small oil lamp as his only source of light at night. The persistent flooding in Ayutthaya has left many residents in challenging situations, but Laiad's determination to remain on his rooftop highlights the resilience of those affected.
