Thai Government Implements Border Control Measures Amid Myanmar Conflict

Mae Sot:Bangkok The Thai government has implemented increased security measures along the Thai-Myanmar border following a surge in conflict that has resulted in stray bullets landing on Thai territory.

According to Thai News Agency, the government, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, has prioritized the safety of residents near the border. In response to the situation, security agencies have tightened control over trade routes in the Mae Sot and Phop Phra districts of Tak province. This decision follows recent fighting in Myanmar that has caused damage to homes in Thailand due to stray bullets.

Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, stated that the Naresuan Task Force, along with other security agencies, has instructed Mae Sot Customs to suspend the import and export of goods through certain channels not approved until the situation stabilizes. This suspension, effective from October 30 to November 5, 2026, aims to prevent smuggling that could support the conflict in Myanmar and ensure public safety.

The government clarified that the measures are not a complete closure of all border checkpoints but a suspension of exemptions for specific routes. Businesses are advised to comply with existing laws and check conditions with Mae Sot Customs before proceeding with trade.

Furthermore, the government has tasked the Governor of Tak Province and security officials to closely monitor the unfolding events. Local authorities are providing assistance to those affected, noting previous reports of damaged homes and one injury treated at Mae Sot Hospital.

For those needing to travel or transport goods, monitoring announcements from relevant authorities is recommended. The measures are in place until November 5, 2026, or until the situation improves, with no automatic reopening of crossing points after the deadline.

Ms. Lalida emphasized that public safety is the government's top priority, and the control measures aim to mitigate the impact of the conflict while maintaining peace and order. The government encourages the public to follow official updates to avoid misinformation.
