Prime Minister's Office Spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat disclosed that the signing of the Joint Declaration by the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, witnessed by US President Donald J. Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the ASEAN Chair, marks a significant step for both countries.
According to Thai News Agency, the key points of the Joint Declaration signed today include commitments to peace and stability between Thailand and Cambodia. Both nations have reiterated their dedication to resolving disputes peacefully, respecting international borders, and promoting shared prosperity in the region. Additionally, they have reaffirmed the implementation of agreements reached at the General Border Committee meeting.
The declaration includes the signing of a document on the 'Scope of Establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT),' which will comprise personnel from ASEAN Member States to oversee the effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement. Both countries have committed to reducing tensions and restoring confidence through various measures, such as withdrawing heavy weapons from border areas and refraining from spreading provocative information.
Humanitarian efforts, including demining in border areas, have been agreed upon to protect civilian lives without affecting land border demarcations. The declaration also emphasizes resolving border disputes peacefully, using bilateral mechanisms like the General Border Committee and the Joint Boundary Commission.
The spokesperson highlighted that only after these points are implemented will the countries consider officially ending hostilities. The process of releasing Cambodian prisoners of war will begin, showcasing their commitment to peace.
