Bangkok: The Thai Cabinet has officially declared August 12 as an annual national day and public holiday to commemorate the birth anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, and to honor her contributions to the nation. This significant decision was announced by Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office.
According to Thai News Agency, the designation of this day follows the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit on October 24, 2025, an event that deeply saddened the Thai people. In recognition of Her Majesty's compassion and dedication to the country, a royal merit-making ceremony will be conducted annually on this day. Additionally, the Cabinet has approved special leave for civil servants participating in ordination ceremonies in India and Nepal during this period.
The Cabinet has also made notable appointments and policy changes. Raphiphat Chandrasriwong has been appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, taking effect from October 2026. This appointment was proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and approved by the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Yotsanun Wongsawat.
In a separate international engagement, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's recent visit to China was highlighted by his performance of the Chinese song "Tian Mi Mi," which was well-received as a gesture of musical diplomacy. According to Lianhe Zaobao, a Chinese-language newspaper in Singapore, this act exemplified friendly relations between Thailand and China, underscoring the cultural ties between the two nations.
The Prime Minister's visit also resulted in 15 new agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including infrastructure, technology, and trade. The Prime Minister has instructed agencies to develop action plans to implement these agreements promptly.
On the digital front, the Thai Cabinet approved the APEC Ministerial Statement on Digital and AI 2026, which focuses on enhancing digital connectivity, cybersecurity, and investment in digital ecosystems. This initiative aims to foster inclusive growth and empower citizens with improved digital skills.
In domestic policy, the Cabinet has approved revisions to the Chiang Mai city plan, allowing commercial use of certain forest conservation lands to boost local economies and tourism. The changes reflect evolving economic and social conditions in the region.
The Cabinet also endorsed the removal of the Red-whiskered Bulbul from the list of protected wildlife, facilitating its breeding as an economic activity. This decision aligns with efforts to balance conservation with economic development.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved tax reforms to support social enterprises by increasing tax deductions and extending benefits. These measures are designed to promote sustainable community development and employment for vulnerable groups.
In fisheries management, the Cabinet unveiled a five-year plan to enhance the Thai fishing industry and combat illegal fishing, aiming for sustainable growth and international competitiveness.
The government has also prepared a human rights report for the United Nations, highlighting legal reforms and expanded citizen opportunities. This reflects Thailand's commitment to human rights and sustainable development goals.
Lastly, the Cabinet has allocated 843 million baht for the restoration of irrigation systems in five southern provinces affected by floods, ensuring improved water management and infrastructure resilience.
