Bangkok: Restaurant businesses are celebrating as the government has lifted restrictions on alcohol sales from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, sparking hopes for a tourism rebound ahead of the New Year.
According to Thai News Agency, the change is seen as a crucial move to align with Thailand’s status as a major tourist destination, deviating from a 1972 law that was originally aimed at curbing civil servants’ drinking habits.
Mr. Sorathep Steve, president of the Restaurant Business Association and honorary advisor to the Hostel Association of Thailand, expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Anutin and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee for this legislative adjustment. The previous restriction not only posed challenges for restaurant businesses but also deterred tourists who faced penalties if they remained in restaurants beyond the designated hours. This situation had the potential to divert tourists to other ASEAN countries, impacting Thailand’s competitiveness in the region.
Mr. Sorathep highlighted that the extended alcohol sales hours could boost restaurant revenues by at least 20%. Tourists, who often dine later in the day, will now be able to enjoy alcohol with their meals, leading to longer stays and increased orders. This change is also expected to enhance the appeal of Thailand as a tourist destination, especially during its high season, by catering to the preferences of international visitors who enjoy relaxing with a drink in the tropical climate.
The government’s decision is anticipated to invigorate tourism and the restaurant industry, allowing Thailand to better compete with neighboring countries in attracting international visitors. While the current change is temporary, Mr. Sorathep advocates for a permanent lift of the ban to better reflect the current economic and global environment.
