Thailand Poised to Attract Digital Investments with Environmental Safeguards

Bangkok: Thailand is prepared to attract quality digital investments while managing impacts on water, energy, and communities.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, highlighted the growing investor interest in Thailand's data center sector as a positive indication of the country's potential to become a regional digital infrastructure hub. This development is anticipated to support the growth of Cloud, AI, e-Commerce, FinTech, and other essential digital services.

Investing in data centers is viewed as a crucial infrastructure move for the modern economy, enabling quicker access to digital services for Thai businesses, reducing data latency, and enhancing the country's long-term competitiveness. The government, however, emphasizes the importance of considering the readiness of the area and the impact on the public, particularly concerning water, energy, and the environment. Data centers, known for their cooling system requirements and high electricity demands, could strain resources if not carefully planned.

Ms. Ratchada stated that while the government supports the digital economy's growth, it must not compromise the quality of life for the people. She emphasized that investments should adhere to standards, efficiently use water, and not impact consumption, agriculture, or the community's ecosystem. The government's strategy is to encourage quality investment by evaluating the suitability of the area, water resources, electricity systems, and incorporating energy-saving technologies and water management plans. Post-completion monitoring measures will ensure investments align with the area's actual potential.

The Thai government aims to position the country as a destination for responsible technology investors, not merely as a recipient of extensive investment but as one with clear environmental standards and regulatory oversight. Ms. Ratchada pointed out Thailand's advantages in terms of location, digital infrastructure, human resources, and domestic demand. The government is prepared to collaborate with relevant agencies to support investment based on readiness, while also safeguarding the rights of local communities. This approach aims to establish Thailand as a trusted data center hub, ensuring technological development proceeds without jeopardizing the country's water, energy, and environmental security.
