Bangkok: The Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) revealed that Thailand will host a new MotoGP event within five years, generating 28 billion baht in economic value for the country.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Kongsak Yodmanee, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, shared Thailand’s progress in hosting the MotoGP motorcycle racing world championship. This comes after the Cabinet’s approval of the bid for another five years, spanning from 2027 to 2031. Dorna Sports, the event’s copyright holder, officially announced the contract extension with Thailand. The Cabinet confirmed that the 3,997.86 billion baht approved only covers the financial framework for hosting the race over the five years, with the specific amount yet to be approved. The budget, separate from other allocations, must be submitted annually and is earmarked for sports development.
Dr. Kongsak explained that a multi-year study was conducted before presenting the contract to the Cabinet for consideration. This evaluation included past race investments, revenue, and economic value. Throughout the six MotoGP races held between 2018 and 2025, excluding 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 situation, the organization generated 24.927 billion baht in economic value for Thailand, averaging 4.000-5.000 billion baht per year.
“Thailand’s bid to host the MotoGP race for another five years has an estimated economic value of over 28 billion baht over the five years,” Dr. Kongsak stated.
The MotoGP World Championship motorcycle race is a popular motorsport globally, with more than 800 million people following the event both at the racetrack and through live broadcasts in 207 countries. In Thailand, Buriram Province is a significant draw for motorsport fans, attracting over 1.23 million spectators.
