Bangkok: The government of Thailand is accelerating efforts to capitalize on the successful outcomes of the Prime Minister's recent visit to China, focusing on establishing new security mechanisms, boosting the defense industry, and collaborating with China to support regional stability. Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul welcomed Admiral Dong Jun, China's Minister of National Defense, during his official visit to Thailand.
According to Thai News Agency, the meeting with Admiral Dong Jun was a continuation of discussions initiated during the Prime Minister's official visit to China the previous week. The Chinese delegation acknowledged the positive results of the visit and expressed readiness to advance the initiatives discussed with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. These initiatives aim to achieve concrete benefits for both nations.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Anutin highlighted the establishment of a joint consultation mechanism involving the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense from both countries. This "2+2" mechanism is designed to enhance policy coordination on security, intelligence exchange, defense industry development, and the suppression of transnational crimes, such as call center scams and online crimes.
Admiral Dong Jun noted Thailand's important role in regional economic and security matters. He emphasized China's commitment to strengthening its relationship with Thailand and supporting the establishment of security cooperation mechanisms.
Prime Minister Anutin also announced that both sides had agreed on draft terms for a Joint Committee on Military Cooperation, Equipment, and Technology. This committee will function at the defense ministerial level and guide long-term cooperation. Thailand is prepared to participate in the first meeting in China, reflecting a significant upgrade in defense ties and mutual trust.
The Prime Minister reiterated Thailand's commitment to developing its defense industry and encouraged cooperation with China in research, production, and technology transfer. The government also invited China's defense industry to participate in the Defense and Security 2027 event to further expand bilateral defense cooperation.
Regarding regional security, Prime Minister Anutin affirmed Thailand's dedication to resolving disputes peacefully through negotiation, adhering to international law and good neighborly principles. He thanked China for its support in peaceful negotiations and conflict resolution.
Concluding the discussions, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in the strong friendship between Thailand and China. He emphasized that enhanced cooperation would benefit both nations and contribute to regional security, economic growth, and peace amidst global challenges. The government aims to build on the visit's successes to achieve tangible results and drive regional peace, stability, and prosperity for a better quality of life in a sustainable manner.
