Manila: Academics highlight Thailand’s proactive stance in tackling scammers, with the nation taking a prominent role in promoting anti-scammer initiatives at the ASEAN Legal Affairs Ministers’ Meeting. Assistant Professor Wanwichit Boonprong from Rangsit University commented on the 13th ASEAN Law Ministers Meeting (ALAWMM), emphasizing Thailand’s commitment to combating transnational crimes.
According to Thai News Agency, the meeting held in Manila on November 14th provided a platform for Thailand to showcase its leadership in ASEAN’s anti-scammer strategies. Pol. Lt. Gen. Ruttapol Naowarat, the Thai Minister of Justice, proposed prioritizing the suppression of transnational crimes, including cybercrime, call center fraud, human trafficking, and drug trafficking, as a key focus for ASEAN. The signing of the ASEAN Treaty on Extradition by representatives from all 11 ASEAN member states further reinforced regional collaboration in addressing transnational crimes, including scams.
Asst. Prof. Wanwichit noted the significance of the new Minister of Justice’s approach, particularly given his background as a police officer with deep experience in the southern Isan region bordering Cambodia. While the government’s declaration of war on scammers elevates the issue to a national agenda, Asst. Prof. Wanwichit stressed the need for concrete actions to meet public expectations. Effectively tackling the scammer problem before the parliamentary dissolution could enhance public confidence and influence the upcoming elections. Despite being an outsider, Pol. Lt. Gen. Rutthapol’s extensive experience as a former operational officer and detective positions him well to address local crimes. His recent retirement from government service is seen as an opportunity to build on his expertise seamlessly. The Ministry of Justice is urged to take bold steps to successfully combat the scammer issue.
