Bangkok: Thailand is set to host the 2026 International Monetary Fund-World Bank Group (IMF-WBG) Annual Meetings, marking the second time it has been chosen for this significant event. The meetings are scheduled to take place from October 12-18, 2026, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Chayawadee Chaianan, Assistant Governor of the Bank of Thailand, and Mr. Winij Wisetsuvarnabhumi, Director-General of the Fiscal Policy Office, announced the details during a press conference. They emphasized that hosting the 2026 IMF-WBG Annual Meetings is a critical opportunity for enhancing Thailand’s image on the global stage, particularly in its economic and financial capacities within Southeast Asia. It also highlights Thailand’s capabilities in hosting international events, demonstrating its readiness in infrastructure, tourism, and venue management.
The event is expected to bring over 15,000 participants from 191 countries, including nearly 400 finance ministers and central bank governors. This influx is anticipated to stimulate the domestic economy, significantly benefiting the tourism, service, and investment sectors. As the host, Thailand will have the chance to present its rich cultural heritage, arts, and cuisine to a global audience.
Ms. Chayawadee shared that the main theme for the 2026 meetings will be “Thailand’s New Horizons: Empowering People, Building Resilience.” This theme focuses on placing people at the center of development and fortifying the economic and financial systems. It aims to leverage Thailand’s strengths in digital payments, creative industries, medical tourism, and workforce potential. The theme also emphasizes skill development and economic opportunities to ensure sustainable income growth.
The meetings will also address digital financial resilience amidst rising digital technology use in the financial system. An important discussion point will be financial security, particularly the issue of scammers in the ASEAN region. The IMF will present a report on the challenges Thailand faces and strategies to address them. Additionally, a seminar on scammers in Thailand is planned for the following year.
The IMF-WBG Annual Meetings are traditionally held every October, alternating between the organization’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., and selected member countries every three years to promote regional diversity and international collaboration.
