Bangkok: The government is upgrading regional airports, implementing the AFIS system for the first time in Thailand, to accommodate expanding tourism. The pilot project will focus on Phrae and Phetchabun airports.
According to Thai News Agency, the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, is advancing efforts to enhance aviation infrastructure to support the growth of travel and tourism in secondary cities. The Ministry of Transport has tasked the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd. (AeroThai) with developing an air traffic management system and preparing to implement the Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) for the first time in the country. This initiative aims to improve the efficiency of regional airports and accommodate future flight expansion.
The deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office highlighted that the AFIS system is an airport flight information service system that utilizes technology and automation. It is particularly suitable for airports with low flight volumes, as it enhances airspace management efficiency, reduces manpower requirements, and upgrades aviation service standards. A pilot program is set to be launched at Phrae and Phetchabun airports by 2028, with potential expansion to other regional airports.
Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana emphasized the government's focus on developing regional airports as a crucial mechanism for stimulating the economy and tourism. Phitsanulok province, in particular, is seen as a gateway to the lower northern region, connecting travel to Sukhothai, Phetchabun, Uttaradit, and Tak provinces. Upgrading the air traffic management system and adopting modern technology are expected to increase travel efficiency, distribute income to the regions, and support the government's tourism promotion policy.
Currently, Phitsanulok Airport accommodates an average of 1,838 flights monthly, with 62% being military flights and 38% civilian flights. The Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (ARIT) has prepared its systems, equipment, and personnel to support the anticipated growth in flight volume and the long-term development of aviation infrastructure.
"The government is moving forward with upgrading the air transportation system, coupled with the adoption of new technologies, to enhance safety and efficiency in services, connect secondary cities with major tourist destinations, distribute economic opportunities to the regions, and strengthen Thailand's potential as a regional transportation hub," Ms. Lalida said.
