Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has issued a comprehensive warning to political parties, outlining five essential rules that must be adhered to in preparation for the upcoming elections. This directive was emphasized during the 12th/2025 meeting of the Political Party Development Fund Committee, chaired by Mr. Itthiphon Boonprakong, who also serves as the Chairman of the Election Commission and the Political Party Development Fund.
According to Thai News Agency, the first rule emphasizes stringent guidelines for political party member recruitment. Parties are prohibited from offering money, property, or benefits to entice individuals to join, beyond the inherent rights and benefits of membership. Violations could lead to the dissolution of the party and legal consequences, including imprisonment and fines.
The second rule pertains to the establishment of party branches and the appointment of provincial representatives. Political parties must notify the Registrar within the legally prescribed timeframe, with non-compliance resulting in fines.
The third rule involves the selection of candidates for the House of Representatives. Parties must engage broadly with their members per the Organic Act on Political Parties. Failure to adhere to these processes may result in imprisonment, fines, and revocation of voting rights.
The fourth rule governs the formulation of political party policies used in advertisements. Parties must transparently disclose the budget and source of funds, anticipated benefits, and potential impacts. Non-compliance will incur substantial fines.
The fifth rule focuses on the control and supervision of party members. The political party executive committee must ensure that members do not engage in activities that undermine election integrity. Breaches will lead to the removal of the entire executive committee, with a 20-year ban on holding party positions or participating in candidate selection.
These regulations underscore the ECT's commitment to ensuring transparent and fair elections in Thailand. Political parties are urged to strictly comply with these rules to avoid severe penalties.
