Thailand’s Tourism Ministry Seeks Changes to Alcohol Sale Restrictions

Bangkok: The Tourism Authority of Thailand is eagerly awaiting the lifting of a current ban on alcohol sales between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM as it seeks to better accommodate international tourists. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Atthakorn Sirilathayakorn, Minister of Tourism and Sports, revealed that the ministry recently participated in a meeting with the National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee on November 13th. The discussions focused on the announcement that bans alcohol sales during the specified hours and prohibits drinking after midnight, which has led to confusion among foreign tourists and local business operators. In response, the ministry proposes adjustments to the announcement to better align with tourist behaviors and needs. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is preparing to collaborate with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to inform international tourists and embassies about the official announcement. The proposal aims to extend drinking hours past midnight, stimulating the touris m and entertainment sectors. While the proposed changes to the announcement do not necessitate legal amendments, they can be issued by the Prime Minister's Office within 15 days and enforced immediately without requiring a Cabinet meeting. This is anticipated to enhance convenience and create a vibrant atmosphere for tourists during the peak year-end season.
