Bangkok: Thousands of Red Shirt supporters are gathering at Klong Prem Prison as anticipation builds for the parole of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Korkaeo Pikulthong, deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party, revealed in an interview that supporters are preparing to welcome Thaksin upon his release, scheduled between 7:00 and 8:00 AM tomorrow. Despite the large turnout, Thaksin, seen as the spiritual leader of the Pheu Thai Party, is expected to abstain from political activities, opting instead to spend time with his family.
Mr. Korkaeo emphasized that Thaksin is unlikely to engage in political maneuvering, expressing a desire to focus on family life. He acknowledged Thaksin's significant influence and intelligence, which often attract media and political attention. However, Korkaeo stressed that any opinions Thaksin might share would be based on his experience and not political strategizing. He urged the media to respect Thaksin's time with his family, cautioning against misinterpreting his insights as political actions.
Korkaeo also addressed the opposition to Thaksin's parole, criticizing those he deemed heartless for their calls to extend his imprisonment. He urged society to move past old conflicts and allow Thaksin to enjoy his retirement peacefully. He noted that Thaksin remains a beloved figure among many Thais, despite being legally barred from political office.
Regarding the terms of Thaksin's parole, Korkaeo expressed disagreement with the requirement for Thaksin to wear an Electronic Monitoring (EM) bracelet. He argued that Thaksin's status as a former Prime Minister and his intention to remain in Thailand with his family negate the need for such monitoring. Despite his disapproval, Korkaeo acknowledged the political dynamics at play and refrained from criticizing specific individuals involved in the decision.
As preparations continue, the Pheu Thai Party is organizing logistical support for the gathering, including food and accommodations for those traveling from other provinces. Party members and supporters are expected to convene in large numbers to celebrate Thaksin's release, underscoring his enduring legacy and influence within Thai politics.
