Bangkok: Political observer Thepthai Senpong has raised concerns over the differing opinions of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilapraphan on the local government exam cheating scandal. This discrepancy has sparked questions about whether the investigation is truly over or if it will expand further.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilapraphan, who chairs the fact-finding committee on this issue, recently announced the results of their investigation into the 2025 local government civil service examination. The investigation revealed multiple deficiencies, including irregularities in the Terms of Reference (TOR), examination center divisions, and examination paper preparations. A significant finding was the manipulation of post-exam scores, with evidence showing adjustments in certification, affecting the number of certified individuals and reflecting serious irregularities in score sheets.
The investigation has implicated over 100 individuals, including high-ranking officials and external parties. To protect the integrity of the case, the list of names remains confidential. The committee has gathered strong evidence, supported by witness statements, employment contracts, and financial documents from the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO). Due to the lack of transparency and widespread leakage, a complete retake of the exam might be necessary.
The committee proposes a four-dimensional punishment approach, including criminal, civil, disciplinary, and ethical actions, and plans to submit the case to the Prime Minister for further prosecution. Law enforcement agencies, such as the Royal Thai Police (RTP), the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), and the Civil Service Commission (CSC), are ready to take the case forward. A timeline has been set to dismiss corrupt individuals from their positions by August, aiming to restore the local government's image.
In contrast, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has stated that the investigation is complete, with all necessary processes and disciplinary actions in place. He emphasized that the investigation's expansion is ongoing, but considers the matter settled, aside from awaiting court sentencing for the perpetrators.
The differing opinions between Mr. Pakorn and Mr. Anutin raise public doubt about the investigation's status. Thepthai Senpong has urged both leaders to unify their stance to prevent confusion and ensure a cohesive government approach to the scandal.
