Udon thani: The Ministry of Transport has launched a new flight route connecting Udon Thani, Suvarnabhumi, and Tokyo, marking a significant step in upgrading Udon Thani Airport to a regional aviation hub. This move was spearheaded by Phatarapong Phatprasit, the Deputy Minister of Transport, who inaugurated the Udon Thani-Suvarnabhumi-Tokyo flight route and introduced Thai Vietjet's Sky ConX connecting flight service.
According to Thai News Agency, the initiative aims to enhance travel convenience by offering a single check-in and on-departure baggage collection service. This advancement is expected to boost connectivity, stimulate the economy, and promote tourism. Mr. Phatarapong oversaw the "Opening the Skies of Udon Thani: Connecting International Travel" event, welcomed the inaugural Thai Vietjet Air flight VZ200, and chaired discussions on upgrading Udon Thani Airport to an international flight hub.
The project is designed to transform Udon Thani Airport into a full-fledged international airport, enabling direct international flights with seamless access. Thai Vietjet's Sky ConX service facilitates this by allowing passengers to check in and drop off baggage only once at the originating airport. This enhances transportation potential and supports Udon Thani's ambition to become an aviation hub for the Northeast region and the Greater Mekong Subregion.
Mr. Phatarapong mentioned that Udon Thani Airport is in the process of applying for international airport recognition. The application is under review by the Department of Airports before submission to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand. Infrastructure and service systems are being monitored to ensure they meet international safety, security, and convenience standards.
The airport has upgraded Terminal B to support CIQ operations, including customs, immigration, and quarantine checkpoints, ensuring passenger safety. Furthermore, road constructions are underway to improve safety, reduce congestion, and accommodate the increasing passenger numbers.
The Ministry of Transport plans to integrate transportation systems under the Airport for Regional Development policy, connecting Udon Thani Airport with key tourist attractions to promote tourism and stimulate the local economy. The airport currently handles over 3.9 million passengers annually and will launch new direct routes to China in 2026.
To support the upcoming Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo, a One Transport plan will provide shuttle bus services connecting the airport to the event venue. This aims to facilitate travel and accommodate the expected increase in travelers.
Mr. Phatarapong concluded by emphasizing the Ministry's commitment to developing regional airports and transportation infrastructure to create economic opportunities and enhance Thailand's competitiveness as a sustainable regional aviation hub.
