Udon Thani:The government is undertaking a significant revamp of the Udon Thani Horticultural Expo, aiming to establish it as a new landmark that will draw 3.6 million tourists, generate over 20 billion baht in revenue, and stimulate the local economy.
According to Thai News Agency, Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, is advancing the organization of the Udon Thani Expo 2026. Scheduled from November 1, 2026, to March 14, 2027, the expo is set to be an international-standard event, offering economic opportunities and promoting Thailand's agricultural potential as a tourist destination.
The event is projected to attract over 3.6 million participants, contributing more than 20 billion baht to the economy, creating over 81,000 jobs, and generating over 7.7 billion baht in tax revenue. Local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and transportation services are expected to benefit significantly, while infrastructure developments will enhance the quality of life in Udon Thani and surrounding areas.
Following recommendations from the International Association of Horticultural Society (AIPH), the event's budget has been increased by 250 million baht, reaching a total of 2,500 million baht. This adjustment was made after a December 2025 inspection by AIPH, which found the project 40 percent complete but needing improvements to meet international standards.
Beyond economic gains, the World Horticultural Expo offers Thailand a platform to exhibit its biodiversity and agricultural innovations. The expo will expand green spaces in Udon Thani and the broader northeastern region. Post-expo plans include transforming the site into a hub for international events, an agricultural showcase, a public park, and an ecotourism site for the Greater Mekong Subregion, with management potentially transferring to the Udon Thani Provincial Administrative Organization.
The Deputy Spokesperson urged the public to visit the World Horticultural Expo in Udon Thani Province, highlighting the diversity of plants and advancements in Thai agriculture. He also encouraged support for local tourism and businesses to ensure ongoing benefits for Udon Thani and the Isaan region.
