Udon Thani:The Udon Thani World Horticultural Expo is making waves as it opens new opportunities for farmers while boosting the local economy. The event, described as a dream come true by Mr. Watcharaphol Khaokham, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, showcases the transformation of the Nong Dae wetland area into a major tourist attraction and venue for the expo.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Watcharaphol elaborated on the expo's origins during an appearance on the "Share the News" program on MCOT NEWS FM 100.5. He credited Mr. Wichian Khaokham, a former President of the Udon Thani Provincial Administrative Organization and a descendant of farmers, for the idea of developing the wetland area. This initiative has attracted significant interest, with people arriving by special train and exceeding expectations at the event's opening ceremony.
The expo has revitalized Udon Thani city, with increased activity in restaurants, street food stalls, convenience stores, and hotels. The event also creates economic benefits for farmers, who are collaborating with entrepreneurs to use agricultural products in food and display items, enhancing sales channels and adding value to local produce.
Revenue from the expo is allocated into two main areas ecosystem conservation and local conservation. The International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) provided guidance on land preparation to ensure compliance with environmental criteria. The expo also emphasizes local identity and culture, offering communities a platform to showcase and sell local products, highlighting both native and international plant species.
Mr. Watcharaphol emphasized that the expo is a stepping stone for future development. The area aims to serve as an exhibition and convention center, evolving into a learning resource for Udon Thani and the nation beyond the event's conclusion.
