Bangkok: Varicose veins are more than just an aesthetic concern; they signify underlying venous circulatory system disorders that, if left untreated, can lead to serious complications such as chronic wounds and skin inflammation.
According to Thai News Agency, genetic factors play a significant role in the development of varicose veins. If one parent has varicose veins, there is a 40-45% likelihood that their child will develop them. This risk increases to as much as 90% if both parents are affected. Contributing factors include gender, age, weight, and prolonged periods of standing or sitting, which are common in occupations such as office work or long-distance driving.
Varicose veins vary in size and appearance. Small veins appear as thin, red or pink threads under the skin, while medium-sized veins manifest as green or blue lines. Large varicose veins, which measure over 3 mm, are characterized by bulging, protruding, and tortuous vessels that resemble centipedes. These are commonly found behind the knee, on the side of the leg, or the inner thigh.
The condition progresses through various stages. In the early stage, small blood vessels become visible with few or no symptoms, though some may experience heaviness or soreness in the legs. As the condition worsens, cramps become frequent and severe, particularly at night or in cold weather. In the critical stage, the ankles or foot bones swell, and the skin may darken, thin, develop rashes, or chronic sores, increasing the risk of blood clots.
Treatment options range from preventative measures like wearing compression stockings to medical interventions. For small veins, medication can shrink them, while larger veins may require catheterization combined with radiofrequency or laser technology, avoiding the need for major surgery. Despite treatment, new varicose veins may form if lifestyle changes are not implemented.
Exercises that promote blood flow back to the heart are also recommended. Simple exercises like ankle flexing and rotation, seated leg raises, and side leg extensions can help alleviate pressure in the blood vessels. Medical consultation is advised if symptoms such as unilateral leg pain, swelling, or frequent cramps occur, as these may indicate more severe issues.
