Bangkok: The National Health Security System (NHSS) is set to undergo an important upgrade, now encompassing bariatric surgery for patients with severe obesity who meet specific medical criteria. This update underscores that the inclusion is strictly for health benefits rather than for cosmetic purposes.
According to Thai News Agency, the initiative was detailed by Ms. Ploytale Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office. The NHSS, commonly referred to as the "30-Baht Card," is a pivotal program aiding over 47 million Thai citizens in accessing medical treatments, ranging from common ailments to chronic conditions requiring high-cost interventions. The public's satisfaction with the "30-Baht Card" is notably high, as it significantly alleviates financial burdens while making public health services more accessible.
Ms. Ploytalee elaborated that the inclusion of bariatric surgery in the "30 Baht Universal Healthcare Card" is aimed at enhancing healthcare access. This surgical procedure is intended for patients with severe obesity, aiming to facilitate weight reduction, mitigate comorbidities, and minimize risks that could adversely impact health and quality of life. It is not intended for cosmetic enhancement and is not universally applicable to all obese individuals. Eligibility requires a thorough assessment of factors such as Body Mass Index (BMI), comorbid conditions, medical history, and the physical and psychological readiness of the patient. Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 65 and meet specific medical criteria.
Patients must consistently attend at least 80% of their scheduled behavioral modification appointments over a six-month period prior to surgery. Those who qualify will receive treatment at accredited facilities equipped with surgeons trained in bariatric procedures and supported by a multidisciplinary team. Ms. Ploytalee emphasized that bariatric surgery is a carefully regulated benefit, performed under stringent academic guidelines to ensure optimal treatment outcomes and patient safety.
