Bangkok: Varawut Silpa-archa, the former leader of the Chart Thai Development Party, has orchestrated a significant political shift by leading former MPs and party leaders to join the Bhumjaithai Party. This move is part of a strategic realignment ahead of the 2026 general election.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Varawut, along with prominent figures such as Mr. Sorachat Sujit, Mr. Nattawut Prasertsuwan, and Mr. Nopadol Matrisri, among others, registered as members of the Bhumjaithai Party. The transition includes a total of 10 MPs from the Chart Thai Pattana Party’s constituencies in Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom, and Roi Et provinces.
Mr. Varawut explained that the political landscape has evolved, posing challenges for smaller parties. He noted that the Chart Thai Pattana Party previously could only manage one ministry, whereas joining the Bhumjaithai Party allows for a more extensive network and collaboration opportunities, enabling more effective governance for their constituencies. He expressed confidence in Bhumjaithai Party’s potential to lead in forming the next government.
Addressing concerns about his support base under the new party banner, Mr. Varawut emphasized that while sentiments may vary across regions, the core objective remains to serve the people effectively. He highlighted the advantages of joining forces with the Bhumjaithai Party, including a more robust network to address public concerns.
Mr. Varawut dismissed rumors of a temporary alliance between the Chart Thai Pattana Party and the Bhumjaithai Party, asserting that the collaboration is intended to strengthen the Bhumjaithai Party with pooled resources and dedication.
When questioned about the possibility of fielding candidates from the Chart Thai Pattana Party in the next election, Mr. Varawut refrained from commenting, citing his departure from the party’s leadership. He also stated that future collaboration roles within the Bhumjaithai Party would depend on the party leader’s strategy.
Regarding speculation about his candidacy for prime minister under the Bhumjaithai Party, Mr. Varawut expressed no objections, focusing instead on the opportunity to serve the public effectively.
Finally, on the prospect of retaining all seats for the Bhumjaithai Party, Mr. Varawut acknowledged the strengths of their opponents and emphasized their commitment to a rigorous campaign, particularly in Suphan Buri province.
