Naypyidaw: Vietnam's Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung is set to visit Myanmar on Wednesday, marking the first official visit by a Vietnamese foreign minister since the military coup in 2021. This pivotal visit involves discussions with Myanmar's Foreign Minister and the co-chairing of a bilateral cooperation meeting with Myanmar's diplomatic leaders.
According to Thai News Agency, this diplomatic engagement comes shortly after Vietnam and Myanmar appointed and exchanged new ambassadors, signaling a potential shift in relations. Vietnam has highlighted Myanmar's significant role within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and reiterated the importance of ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus for Peace in Myanmar as a framework for continued relations and support.
Since the military coup that ousted Myanmar's civilian government, the nation has faced diplomatic isolation from ASEAN. However, recent months have seen efforts by Thailand and Laos to foster dialogue and engagement with Myanmar. Notably, Myanmar's military leader and president, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, made visits to Laos in July and Thailand in August, indicating a gradual shift in regional dynamics.
