VISTEC Researcher Dr. Chayasit Utamapinan Wins Prestigious Outstanding Scientist Award for 2026

Bangkok: Dr. Chayasit Utamapinan, a renowned researcher from the Vidyasirimethi Institute of Technology (VISTEC), has been honored with the Outstanding Scientist Award for 2026 for his pioneering contributions in biochemistry and synthetic biology. His groundbreaking work in genetic code expansion technology has led to significant advancements in the detection of proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease and the transformation of plastic waste into valuable chemicals. The award was presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

According to Thai News Agency, the award ceremony was organized by the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Technology under the Royal Patronage. The event, which has been held annually for 45 years, was presided over by Professor Dr. Yoschanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. Distinguished attendees included Professor Dr. Yongyuth Yuthavong, former Deputy Prime Minister, and Professor Dr. Chamras Limtrakul, Chairman of the Outstanding Scientist Award Committee. The ceremony took place at the Centara Grand at CentralPlaza Ladprao, Bangkok.

Professor Dr. Chamras Limtrakul emphasized the importance of developing Thailand's research capabilities to enhance competitiveness and overcome the middle-income trap. He highlighted that global investment in research and development reached approximately US$2.87 trillion in 2024, with countries like South Korea investing heavily in strategic industries. He stressed that Thailand must not only increase its research investments but also improve the quality of its research system to support world-class researchers.

Dr. Chayasit Utamapinan's research, recognized for its academic excellence, has the potential to bring transformative changes to the international scientific community. His work includes the development of technologies for real-time measurement of proteins related to Alzheimer's, discovery of enzymes to break down PET plastic, and creation of diagnostic platforms for infectious diseases using CRISPR technology. His research has been published in leading journals like Nature and JACS, showcasing his ability to create fundamental knowledge and new technologies.

The Young Scientist Award for 2026 was also presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, with recipients including Dr. Pavin Eiamprasertkul from Thammasat University and Dr. Thanaphol Charoenwongpaiboon from Silpakorn University. Both researchers were recognized for their innovative work in electrochemical engineering and enzyme technology, respectively, each receiving a cash prize of 100,000 baht.
